The place called “Girl’s Stone”

Another tourist point, which attracts the attention of passers-by, through the legends that accompany it, is the rock called “Piatra Fetei”. Positioned on the winding road between Smârdan and Măcin, the area called “Piatra Fetei” is a meadow formed by the Danube, an ideal place for fishing, especially during the receding waters.

Urban legends did not take long to appear, because the desire of tourists to find out the mystery behind the rock surrounded by water caused all kinds of stories to appear.

One of the stories of this rock begins like in childhood fairy tales, with the famous “once upon a time”. So, once upon a time there were two groups of giants who settled in these Dobrogean areas. One at Brăila, another at Balta Igliţa. The legend says that one of the giants from Brăila fell in love with a girl from Igliţa and, once the time for marriage came, he sent a friend to woo the young lady, but he returned home with bad news: the girl did not want him man the giant from Brăila. This refusal only ignited the desire for revenge in the souls of the giants from Brăila, thinking that, in this way, they would be able to escape the shame to which they were subjected.

As a result, the giant from Brăila pulled out a rock and threw it towards Igliţa, with the desire to destroy their fortresses and make them disappear from the area. However, the forces of nature changed the trajectory of the rock and stuck it in the pond in front of the village and thus it did not cause any damage.

Seeing what had happened, the girl returned the giant’s gesture and also pulled out a boulder which she threw towards the people of Brăila. Her target was not precise either, because the girl’s rock deviated from the trajectory and stuck in the middle of the swamp, between Brăila and Măcin. Since then, the giants and then all the inhabitants of the area called that rock “Piatra Fetei”.

There are many legends and each tourist point has a story behind it, which the residents of the area know best, willing to share stories, old or new, with the young.
